Think about it. When was the last time you spent real time on the floor—not just bending over far enough to pick something up?

Most adults get extremely efficient at completing daily tasks with as little movement as possible. We sit in the car, sit at work, sit on the couch, and sleep in a bed. If something falls, we hunch over just enough to grab it and come right back up.

Somewhere along the way, the floor becomes foreign. We stop sitting cross-legged. We stop crawling. We stop moving through a deep squat, kneeling, a straddle, a hurdler position, or a 90/90 position. Even sitting on the floor starts to feel like something only children do.

That is a problem.

I have trained adults who could not sit upright in a butterfly or straddle position without falling backward. They were not 90 years old. Some were decades younger.

We should maintain the ability to sit on the floor, move across the floor, and get down and back up with confidence. That is not an advanced athletic trick. It is a basic human capacity.

The floor gives you positions a chair never will.

A chair puts your body at one arbitrary height. Use it for enough hours, and your hips, knees, ankles, trunk, and shoulders spend most of the day inside a very small movement vocabulary.

The floor immediately gives you more options. You can sit cross-legged, move into 90/90, straighten one leg, open into a straddle, kneel, crawl, rotate, or transition through a deep squat. Your hips and hamstrings have to accommodate more range. Your trunk has to stay more active because there is no chair back holding you up. You also change positions more often because the floor never lets you get quite as comfortable as the couch.

That constant low-level exposure matters. A five-minute mobility routine can be useful, but it cannot do all the work if the rest of your day never asks you to move through depth.

The floor is not just where you stretch. It is where you find out how many movement options you still own.

What getting up from the floor actually reveals.

To sit down and stand back up without using your hands, several qualities have to work together:

Even using your hands can expose useful abilities. If you rise from a three- or four-point stance without dropping to both knees, you need enough wrist and shoulder mobility to accept weight through the arms. Your shoulder blades and trunk have to organize that force. Your hips still have to move underneath you.

I do not only look at whether someone can get up. I look at how they do it. Is it smooth or hesitant? Do they have one strategy or five? Can they move slowly with control? Can they move quickly when they need to? Do they trust the position, or are they searching for the nearest piece of furniture before they begin?

More options usually mean more usable capacity. That matters in daily life, and it matters in athletics. Almost every sport eventually asks you to absorb force, change levels, or get off the ground quickly.

Yes, researchers have studied this—but do not turn it into a mortality trick.

The sitting-rising test scores how a person sits down on the floor and stands back up, subtracting points when the hands, knees, or other supports are needed. In a 2025 prospective cohort study, 4,282 adults ages 46 to 75 completed the test and were followed for a median of 12.3 years. Lower scores were associated with higher natural and cardiovascular mortality after the researchers adjusted for several health variables. (Araújo et al., 2025)

An earlier study of 2,002 adults ages 51 to 80 also found that lower sitting-rising scores were associated with higher all-cause mortality. (Brito et al., 2014)

Those are observational associations. They do not mean that touching a hand to the floor steals years from your life, and they do not prove that practicing one test will make you live longer. The floor rise is useful because it bundles several physical qualities into one simple task: strength, power, flexibility, balance, coordination, and body composition.

Separate research on floor transfers in community-dwelling adults ages 65 to 96 found the floor-transfer test strongly related to other measures of physical function, disability, frailty, and independence. (Ardali et al., 2019)

Biomechanical research also shows why a floor rise tells us something different from standing up from a chair. Floor-to-stand transfers require different joint angles, torques, and power demands, including greater hip flexion and greater demands at the hip and ankle in the instructed strategy researchers studied. (Floor-to-stand transfer study, 2025)

The goal is not to pass a mortality test. The goal is to keep the qualities the test exposes.

You can be strong and still struggle to move.

I have seen bodybuilders and powerlifters move insane weight on a bench press and then struggle to hold a deep squat or move comfortably on the floor.

That is not an argument against lifting. I believe strength is foundational, and plenty of muscular people move extremely well. But your body adapts to what you ask it to do. If you never train full ranges of motion, move your bodyweight, practice mobility, or spend time in low positions, the missing qualities do not magically appear because your bench press went up.

Strength is most valuable when you can use it. That is one reason I believe adults should combine traditional lifting withbodyweight training, mobility, and movement skill.

Basic function and athleticism are not separate worlds. They are on the same spectrum. Getting off the floor with strength, grace, and speed is a foundation. Do not wait until getting off the floor becomes an emergency.

I started thinking seriously about floor access while training adults in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. You would be surprised how young people can be when getting down and up starts to look difficult.

I have seen people in their 30s with limited mobility who grunt and groan every time they stand up and fall backward when they try to sit on the floor. If that is the direction at 35, what makes you think the ability will be waiting for you at 75 without training it?

We have to be more proactive. Most people overestimate their movement ability until they actually test it, record it, or try a position they have avoided for years.

For an older adult, being unable to get up after a fall can become an emergency—especially when alone. But the value begins long before that. It is being able to garden, reach a low cabinet, camp, play on the floor with your children, kick a soccer ball with your grandchildren, or coach their baseball team without your body deciding the day is over.

I have coached adults in their 60s and 70s who regained exactly those experiences. Almost everyone is surprised by how much the body can still adapt when you give it the right reason and progression.

Touch the floor more.

This does not have to become another formal workout. Put floor time somewhere in your day. Read emails down there. Take a phone call down there. Play with your kids down there. Spend part of your mobility work moving between positions instead of completing one stretch and immediately returning to a chair.

If you have ten minutes, try this:

You do not have to force anything. Sit upright. Lean forward. Change the position of your torso and legs. Notice where you feel tight and spend a little more time there. The main goal is exposure to positions your day normally removes.

If you need both hands or furniture, build the capacity.

Use support when you need it. There is no prize for forcing a hands-free rise before you are ready. A hand, knee, sturdy chair, or stable box can give you an appropriate starting point.

If you need both hands to stand, general leg strength is often part of the answer. Squats, box squats, lunges, and split squats can build the quads and glutes you need. Deep squats and controlled floor transitions build familiarity with the range. Planks, crawling, and three- or four-point transitions teach you to load the hands and shoulders while the trunk stays organized.

Practice getting up in different ways instead of drilling one trick. The goal is not one perfect strategy. The goal is having options.

Try the five-way floor-rise challenge.

See whether you can get down to the floor and back up in five different ways. You might use a cross-legged position, a deep squat, half-kneeling, a side-sit, or a three-point stance. Move slowly before you try to move quickly. Pay attention to which side you choose and which positions you avoid.

This is not pass or fail. Every version gives you information. How many options do you have? Where do you lose balance? Which joint feels restricted? Where do you lack enough strength to finish the movement smoothly?

If you have pain, dizziness, a recent surgery, a history of falls, or another medical concern that could make floor practice unsafe, do not test this alone. Use a stable support and get individualized guidance from an appropriate medical or rehabilitation professional.

Being comfortable near the floor represents freedom, confidence, mobility, and independence. It also gives you access to more of your athletic ability.

The goal is not to pass a mortality test. The goal is to maintain strength, confidence, and independence for the rest of your life.
